Mathew Weiner is the brain and creative force behind AMC's mega hit drama series Mad Men. The writing is fabulous as I have already noted here at different times and the acting follows suit.
If you have one hour to spare a week, make sure to see this. Mad Men just started its third season and the first episode is available in full on the official AMC site. You may view that first episode here. It's aesthetically pleasingly, culturally fascinating, and intellectually stimulating. How often can we say this about TV programming these days?
And Jon Hamm continues to deliver. A true gem of a production.

To the 'Right' of Lenin

Yesterday I had one of the best days of the summer. Pop culturalists anywhere would have had a most stupendous time.
We went to a farm a-la old Americana and after learning how to 'milk a teet' (yes, I did that and I have the pictures to prove it!), and feed a calf, I had the opportunity to visit some really mind-boggling art pieces from the 50's and 60's. I have a huge interest in Americana art, hence this experience was a most incomparable gift.
I'm in the process of compiling a longer and more detailed post about this experience but, for starters, here's a picture of me, to the 'right' of Lenin, holding an authentic Life magazine with John Wayne on the cover. Ah, the text, the text!
It was truthfully an inspiring day.

Beautiful City Photos

The past few years I've developed an active interest in urban photography. Photographs that especially tackle my fancy are those that document various things Americana from the '50's and '60's. Hence, I found the following collection absolutely breath-taking. See them in full here.
But a favorite would have to be Chicago's lake view:
