Some Shorts Are Best Left In the Closet

Sartorialist asks that we consider silk shorts, I say: let's not.
What kind of text could this be? And how could one 'gender' them?

One way to gender this pic would be to object to it from a feminine, masculine and 'other' perspective. I just don't see them passing as 'ok' under any setting that's not pj party-oriented.
I don't see Russell Crowe running to the store to get a pair, if you catch my drift.
Nor do I see Hillary Swank or Alexis Arquette in them......

I don't have a problem with the shorts in this photo. I have a problem with everything else. Is that a blazer he's wearing with SHORTS? I don't care what material the shorts are made out of, they are not to be worn with blazers. And I don't even want to talk about the shoes, the dangly bracelet, the flaming yellow knapsack, or the tattoo.

fashion is relevant, of course. i don't quite get the effort to get casual wear to look like high fashion though. some stuff's meant to be on the runway and other stuff's supposed to be worn to the beach. there's too much going on there. is that a versace piece, anyway.....?
